AFL get it right, St Kilda get it wrong!

Tonight in the game St Kilda vs North Melbourne (in which the Saints had a great come from behind win), the AFL’s interchange rules where challenged again when the Saints had 19 men on the field for a brief few seconds. But after the huge media focus on the 19 men incident involving Sydney and North, they changed the rule. Where in the past, the Captain needed to call for a head count and if either club has more then the normal 18, the team with too many players on the field losing there entire score, the rule was changed to the more appropriate and easier to administer rule of the interchange steward and reserve umpire handling the rule with the penalty being either free kick from the center and a 50m penalty or a free kick where the ball is and a 50m penalty which ever puts the team closer to goal. But back to the incident at hand. Read more

Splitting headache! Teams for first part of Round 14

June 26, 2008 by Molly · Leave a Comment

So its that time of the season that the Dream Team, SuperCoach and other Fantasy Footy coaches hate! Its split round time when you have to pick your side with 4 sides that are having the week off. Two teams that where picked as top 8 contenders (Eagles and Crows) are now seemingly out of the race and have suddenly been ravaged by injures! The Eagles lose 3 to injury and omit 2 and Port Adelaide loose 4 to injury, 1 suspension and 2 omitted. Not only that, but Peter Burgoyne and Chad Cornes are moungst the outs hurting a lot of DT/SC backlines. Have a listen to the Coaches Box to hear more on DT and SC.

The Eagles opponents on the other hands are getting back players with Shane Crawford and Trent Croad named to return meaning Tuck and Boyle get to go play in the VFL this week.  All the rest of the teams for this round below. Check out the MMM AFL Video edition for the ins and outs.

VFL, say hi to your Cousins. Ben Cousins to return?

News today is that Ben Cousins, the AFL player that last year was suspended for bringing the game into disrepute after problems at the West Coast Eagles and admitting to having a drug addiction problem, is considering registering with either a VFL or WAFL club before the deadline this Monday.  Its is reported that his Management company will meet with him over the weekend:

Carlie Merenda, of Flying Start management group, flew to Perth last night to finalise Cousins’ immediate future.”Carlie will be in Perth over the next four or five days doing a number of things for Ben, a part of which is informing him of the processes that need to be put in place by Monday, if he wants to play footy,” Flying Start boss Ricky Nixon said last night.”That’s something Ben will have to make a decision on over the weekend, which includes which state, which club, etc etc.”

AFL boss, Andrew Demetriou has been behind Cousins getting better and returning:

“If it’s part of his rehabilitation process and it helps him get back to good health and playing footy is part of that, absolutely (it is good for him),”

So this brings forward the idea what club will he be likely to join in the AFL if he returns? Leave your thoughts in the Comments below and I will look at it in the near future.

UPDATED: Not so Goodes this time! MRP Findings

NoGoodes

Well there is such a thing as going to the well (or Match Review Panel) too often and it looks like it could be third time unlike for the man dubbed AFL’s Protected Species. Adam Goodes last night was charged with a Level 1 engaging in rough conduct charge after his second quarter bump on the Dee’s Clint Bartram at Manuka oval in Canberra on Sunday.

His past has caught up with him. This offense was assessed as 1 point for negligent conduct, 1 point for it only being low impact and 2 points as he hit Bartram in the head (aka high conduct). This earns Not so Goody Two shoes 125 points that after having added his carry over 93.75 from his bump a couple of weeks ago comes too, 218.75. If he chooses to accept the penalty, he will miss one match and carry over 64.06 points. It will also mean the end of his chances to break Jim Stynes consecutive games record. If he doesn’t take the early medicine, he would try his luck at the tribunal were the Swans have a good record of late but risk a two game holiday (3 weeks when you take the split round into consideration) which would mean he would not only miss the block buster with the Pies on the second week of the split round but would also miss a much anticipated match-up with fellow top 4 team, Hawthorn in round 15 (so as a Hawks fan, I hope he unsuccessfully challenges).

No word yet if the World Wide fund for nature is going to step in to try to defend this Endanger Species.

UPDATE: Goodes has decided that its better the devil you know and has accepted his medicine, taking the week. He will miss the big clash with the Pies but will be back to play the Hawks in Round 15 (D’oh!).  This means his games streak ends at 204.
