Here are the three incidents from the weekend thanks to Channel Nine Sunday footy show:

The two Melbourne papers reported on Matthew Llyods comments on the Footy Show:

I reckon if Robert Murphy goes for that, all players would question whether you bother hip-and-shouldering because a goal might get lower or you might be hip-and-shouldering Brent Harvey and he’s so much smaller than you,” Lloyd said on Channel Nine’s Sunday Footy Show yesterday.

The league told clubs any bump causing forceful contact to an opponent’s head or neck would be reportable as rough conduct unless the offender had a realistic alternative to either contest for the ball, tackle or make an acceptable shepherd.

Now the first comment is incouraging in that it would suggest that the players are learning! How many of these incidents have to happen before they understand that when you go for a bump, the head is off limits and its your responsiblity to not hit it.

I have seen it said that Murphy should get off, but in some ways (not all just this point) his is the worst as the player he bumps is higher then all the others meaning he has to make a more deliberate move to get Ellis in the head.

In my opinion the most likely to get off (and I don’t think he will) is Waters as he at least touches the ball in his bump.

So, basically, you want a game of football where no-one hits anyone? Netball?
Head hits are going to happen, and I don't think a player will deliberately go for another player's head.

People like you frustrate me.

Stuart, thanks for the comment. No, bumps aren't ruled out but there are
100s of hits a week and only 3 this week, none (from memory) last week and 2
the week before and not many before that that are dangerous and head high. I
am sorry, but I accept we have to lose some players like this for a week or
two to make sure that players don't miss weeks with head injures or worst
yet, Next injuries! As I said in today's
podcast (http://afl.mollyzine.com/2008/06/02/mmm-head-hi...
system-explained), I think teams shouldn't tell their players to
stop bumping, just be more careful, consider getting the ball more and wear
that occasionally if you do it wrong you miss a week. A lot of the hits are
just plain not necessary. I remember a situation in the Cats V Blues game
where the player could have bumped and would have been in trouble, but he
stopped and tackled instead and from memory won the free kick. If anyone
knows when that happened, let me know as I will put the video on the site.
