Collingwood successful in Nick Maxwell Appeal
The Magpies and Nick Maxwell have had there Appeal upheld meaning they are the first to successfully argue in the Appeals board there case. We are still waiting for the full findings but the early feel is that the tribunal chairman may have stuffed up in not giving the jury all the options under the rough conduct rule.
It is further believe that the AFL council in the appeal stuffed up in saying that there were some situations that you are better not to bump in. I personally agree with this, but don’t think he should have said it and especially if it wasn’t said in a way that said if the player couldn’t bump safely, they shouldn’t bump. A better way of saying it would have been to say if you bump, you have to wear the consequences of that action.
UPDATE
Here is the Appeal boards finding:
Please find detailed below the summary of the findings of the AFL Appeals Board in the case involving Nick Maxwell, that was heard in Melbourne on Friday, February 20.
1. The contact made by Maxwell was reasonable and permitted under the laws of the game and the guidelines, and was therefore not negligent contact.
2. The head contact was accidentally caused by reason of that contact. The tribunal jury were not required to answer all of the questions that they ought to have in arriving at their decision and, in particular, whether Maxwell’s shepherd was reasonable in the circumstances.
The Appeals Board was then called upon to make the factual findings that were referred to in points one and two.
Peter O’Callaghan, AFL Appeals Board chairman
I am a little surprised. I thought this would clear things up but it is more mystifying to me. Is the points made in point 2 saying that because the tribunal weren’t required to rule on all the questions that they ought to, the appeals panel had to rule on it and in there opinion, the contact was reasonable under the law (point 1)? I think this will open up to more dangerous hits and more appeal hearings as teams will have players reported, suspended and think that they are like the Maxwell case. If I am right about the Appeals board thinking that they needed to decide because of the error at the tribunal, if the tribunal fixes that and they come to the same conclusion they did this time, the appeals board won’t have the right to over turn it as they did this one.
I guess next interesting thing will be what the AFL says and then, how the players handle this and what happens for the next incident.
What do you think? Was justice done? Is the bump now okay?

Tribunal: Solomon gets 8!
Dean Solomon has faced the Tribunal and received 850 points which means that he gets 8 weeks. This will mean that he will miss the rest of this year and 1 week into next year if the Dockers decide to give him another contract. This is a huge blow seeing as he is out of contact at the end of this year.
More from the Tribunal as it comes to hand.
Solomon straight to the Tribunal! MRP Findings
Dean Solomon and the Dockers have to sweat for another day with his case considered bad enough to send straight to the tribunal. This isn’t a good sign and probably points at 5 or more weeks! Read more
UPDATED: Not so Goodes this time! MRP Findings
Well there is such a thing as going to the well (or Match Review Panel) too often and it looks like it could be third time unlike for the man dubbed AFL’s Protected Species. Adam Goodes last night was charged with a Level 1 engaging in rough conduct charge after his second quarter bump on the Dee’s Clint Bartram at Manuka oval in Canberra on Sunday.
His past has caught up with him. This offense was assessed as 1 point for negligent conduct, 1 point for it only being low impact and 2 points as he hit Bartram in the head (aka high conduct). This earns Not so Goody Two shoes 125 points that after having added his carry over 93.75 from his bump a couple of weeks ago comes too, 218.75. If he chooses to accept the penalty, he will miss one match and carry over 64.06 points. It will also mean the end of his chances to break Jim Stynes consecutive games record. If he doesn’t take the early medicine, he would try his luck at the tribunal were the Swans have a good record of late but risk a two game holiday (3 weeks when you take the split round into consideration) which would mean he would not only miss the block buster with the Pies on the second week of the split round but would also miss a much anticipated match-up with fellow top 4 team, Hawthorn in round 15 (so as a Hawks fan, I hope he unsuccessfully challenges).
No word yet if the World Wide fund for nature is going to step in to try to defend this Endanger Species.
UPDATE: Goodes has decided that its better the devil you know and has accepted his medicine, taking the week. He will miss the big clash with the Pies but will be back to play the Hawks in Round 15 (D’oh!). This means his games streak ends at 204.

Hall and Roos press conference this Afternoon. Theme Unacceptable!

Paul Roos and Barry Hall faced the media. Roos started off saying that the incident was unacceptable to the Footy Club. ‘Barry knows it’s unacceptable’ said Roos. Barry went on to add:
“I suppose it was a bit of frustration. It shouldn’t have happened.
“I certainly didn’t mean to hit him high.”
“I gotta prove to everyone again that I can control myself,” He also added that he will have to ‘cop’ whatever punishment the AFL tribunal hand out to him.
If you want to see the incident and let us know what you think the number of weeks he will get will be here.
Also, here is Channel 9’s report on the Press Conference (with on of the dumbest extra angles ever):
April 13, 2008: Barry Hall has apologised to West Coast Eagle Brent Staker for last night’s ugly punch, that is likely to lead to a long suspension.
